1-IPS Officer Rajesh Ranjan Appointed DG Of CISF

Senior IPS officer Rajesh Ranjan was appointed as Director General of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
Mr Ranjan is at present Special Director General, Border Security Force (BSF). He has been appointed as the chief of the CISF till 2020.

2-World’s Largest Solar Park To Come Up In Gujarat

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani approved setting up a 5,000 MW capacity solar park at the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR),which would be the largest such entity in the world after its completion.
The proposed solar power generation project would be set up in 11,000 hectares of land with an investment of Rs 25,000 crore. The project will contribute significantly in achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s target of producing 175 gigawatt of electricity through renewable energy sources by 2022.

3-CWG 2018: Sushil Kumar Wins Gold In Wrestling

Indian wrestler and Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar bagged his third straight Commonwealth Games gold medal after winning the men’s Freestyle 74 kg event.
The 34-year-old wrestler won the final 10-0, having dominated all previous opponents with scorelines of 11-0, 10-0, and 4-0. Sushil has a silver and a bronze in Olympics and was crowned world champion in 2010.

4-FSSAI Launches Initiative To Address Vitamin D Deficiency

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) launched ‘Project Dhoop’, an initiative aimed at shifting the school assembly time to noon to ensure maximum absorption of Vitamin D in students through natural sunlight.
The project was launched in New Delhi and saw participation of around 600 students from NCERT, NDMC and North MCD Schools. Project Dhoop’s Noon Assembly is an innovative and effective concept to ensure that school students get adequate Vitamin D.

5-Indian Consortium And Saudi Aramco Sign MoU For Refinery In Maharashtra

An Indian consortium consisting of IOCL, BPCL and HPCL signed an MoU with Saudi Aramco on the sidelines of the16 International Energy Forum Ministerial.

According to the Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan, the project cost is estimated at around Rs3 lakh crore ($44 billion). The refinery will be capable of processing 1.2 million barrels of crude oil per day (60 million tonnes per annum). The plan is to finish the project by 2025.

6-IGI Among World’s Top 20 Busiest Airports

 

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has climbed six positionsto reach on 16th Position to enter the club of the top 20 airports across the world, the Airport Council International’s preliminary report on airport traffic for 2017.
IGI’s passenger traffic grew by 14.1% year over year. The report added that IGI Airport was also the fastest-growing airport among those in the top 20 club. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport in the United States with 104 million passengers secured the top spot, followed by Beijing at the second position and Dubai at the third.

7-CWG 2018: Rahul Aware Wins India’s 1st Wrestling Gold

Rahul Aware bagged India’s first wrestling gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2018 after beating Canada’s Steven Takahashi in the final of men’s Freestyle 57 kg event.
Before the final, the 26-year-old had claimed two dominating victories with the scorelines 11-0 and 10-0, while he defeated Pakistan’s Muhammad Bilal 12-8 in the semi-final.

8-India’s Kidambi Srikanth Becomes World No. 1 Badminton Player

 

Kidambi Srikanth has become the first Indian male badminton player to attain the world number one ranking since Prakash Padukone in the 1980s.
Srikanth had become the first-ever Indian to win four Superseries titles in a year in 2017. It helped India win gold at the mixed team event at the Commonwealth Games for the first time ever.

9-Bangladesh Ends Reservation In Government Jobs

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has decided to scrap the quota system in government services after thousands of students marched across the country in protest against a controversial policy of setting aside jobs for special groups.
 The students began the protests against discriminatory quotas for government jobs, leaving scores of people injured at the Dhaka University.

10-PM Modi Inaugurates Dr. Ambedkar National Memorial

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Dr Ambedkar National Memorial in New Delhi. The memorial is dedicated to the life and contributions of Dr. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Constitution. The foundation stone for the Memorial was laid by the Prime Minister in 2016.
The memorial has an exhibition area, meditation hall with the Buddha Statue and 12 feet high bronze statue of Dr Ambedkar. It is equipped with a sewerage treatment plant, a rainwater harvesting System and rooftop solar energy

11-President 3-Nation Visit: Completes Final Leg In Zambia, Returns India

President Ram Nath Kovind has returned to New Delhi after three African nations tour of Equatorial Guinea, Swaziland and Zambia. Mr Kovind and his Zambian counterpart Edgar Chagwa Lungu laid the foundation stone ofLusaka traffic Decongestion Project.
The cost of the 93-km road is 289 million dollar India is providing 250 million dollars. The project will be completed in three years. This project is aimed at redesigning the major road network for Lusaka city with a view to reducing traffic jam, travel distance and saving fuel.

12-Late Veteran Actor Vinod Khanna Awarded Dadasaheb Phalke Award

Nineteen-year-old Naman Tanwar won India its first boxing medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, winning a bronze in the men’s 91 kg category.
Naman lost out to Australia’s Jason Whateley in the semifinal of the event to secure the bronze. India has won a total of 35 medals, including 16 golds, 8 silver and11 bronze medals so far.

 

13-CWG 2018: Bajrang Punia Wins His 1st CWG Gold

Wrestler Bajrang Punia won his first Commonwealth Games gold medal, defeating Wales’ Kane Charig by technical superiority in the men’s freestyle 65 kg final in Gold Coast, Australia.
This is India’s fifth medal in wrestling in this edition, with Rahul Aware and Sushil Kumar registering gold wins earlier. Bajrang had won a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games

14-CWG 2018: Anish Bhanwala Becomes India’s Youngest CWG Gold Medalist

Fifteen-year-old shooter Anish Bhanwala became India’s youngest gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games, winning the men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Finals with a record score at Gold Coast, Australia.
India’s Neeraj Kumar stood fifth at the event. Anish, who is participating in his first Commonwealth Games, won gold at the ISSF Junior World Cup in Sydney 2017.

15-NHAI Signs Agreement For Its 1st International Project

The National Highways Authority of India has signed an agreement for the upgradation of Yagyi – Kalewa section of highway in Myanmar to two lanes with earthen shoulder. The aim is to provide seamless vehicular movement for enhancing trade, business, health, education and tourism among India, Myanmar and Thailand.
The project has been funded by Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India and would be executed on EPC mode at a cost of Rs.1177 crores.The project will have 3 new major bridges and 2 new minor bridges. The project would be completed in three years.

16-India Mobile Congress 2018 To Be Held In New Delhi

India Mobile Congress will be held in October 2018 at Aerocity in New Delhi. It is one of the biggest marquee Mobile, Internet and Technology events in Asia, organized by Department of Telecommunications and Cellular Operators Association of India.
According to the Minister of State for Communications Manoj Sinha, the event is an excellent platform for policymakers, industry and regulators to engage in meaningful deliberations to drive the future direction of this important sector.

17-NERL Brings In ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank As Repository Participants

National E-Repository Limited (NERL), a group company of National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Limited (NCDEX ), has brought in ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank on board as the repository participants for pledge finance.
NERL has signed the agreement with both the banks where they will offer pledge finance against eNWRs created on NERL’s repository platform commodities stored in warehouses registered with Warehousing Development and Regulatory Authority (WDRA). ICICI Bank (also a key shareholder with NERL) and HDFC Bank have now been empanelled as repository participants – pledgee with NERL.

18-RBI Tightens Monitoring Of Liberalised Remittance Scheme

The Reserve Bank of India tightened reporting norms for the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) under which an individual can transfer up to USD 2,50,000 abroad in a year. The LRS transactions are currently permitted by banks based on the declaration made by the remitter.
The monitoring of adherence to the limit is confined to obtaining such a declaration without independent verification, in the absence of a reliable source of information. Under the LRS, all resident individuals, including minors, are allowed to freely remit up to USD 2,50,000 per financial year for any permissible current or capital account transaction or a combination of both.

 19-SIDBI Ties Up With CSC To Promote MSEs In 115 Districts

Small Industries and Development Bank of India (SIDBI) announced a plan to promote micro-enterprises in 115 aspirational districts across the country. It has tied up with Common Service Centre (CSC).
The ‘Transformation of Aspirational Districts’ program, which was launched by the prime minister in January 2018, aims to bring about socio-developmental changes in these backward districts which have been chosen from all states of the country.

20-World Bank Approves $55mn For Bangladesh Project

The World Bank has approved $55mn to expand the use of clean renewable energy in rural areas of Bangladesh where grid electricity cannot reach easily. The additional financing to the Second Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Development (RERED II) Project will install 1,000 solar irrigation pumps, 30 solar mini-grids and about 4mn improved cooking stoves in rural areas.
The project, including the additional financing, will enable about 10mn people living in villages, shoals and islands to access electricity and use energy efficient cooking stoves..

21-Rajnath Singh Launches Web-Based App E-FRRO For Foreigners

Home Minister Rajnath Singh launched the web-based application e-FRRO (e-Foreigners Regional Registration Office) scheme under which foreigners can avail, various visa and immigration-related services online. This will facilitate hassle-free travel to India for foreigners.
As per the Home Ministry, the e-FRRO scheme is aimed at building a centralised, transparent online platform for foreigners to avail of visa-related services. It will provide faceless, cashless and paperless services to the foreigners with a user-friendly experience.

22-CII Pegs India’s GDP Growth At 7.3-7.7% For 2018-19

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has announced that it expects India’s gross domestic product (GDP) to grow at 7.3-7.7% during the 2018-19 financial year.
This is based on strengthening demand in the rural economy, including agriculture and non-farm activities, as well as better global growth climate.

23-Kotak Mahindra Bank Pips SBI To Become India’s 2nd Most Valuable Bank

Shares of private lender Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd beat India’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) for the first time to become the second most valued bank in the country. Data from BSE showed that Kotak Mahindra Bank has a market capitalization of Rs2,22,560.69 crore, after its shares rose 1.7%.
SBI market capitalization stood at Rs2,22,043.74 crore. Its shares were trading at Rs248.80 on BSE, down 1% from its previous close. HDFC Bank Ltd remained country’s most valuable bank with a market capitalisation of Rs5.04 trillion.

24-CWG 2018: Complete List Of All The Medals Won By India

India finished third in the medals tally at the Commonwealth Games 2018, courtesy 66 medals including 26 gold20 silver and 20 bronze medals. Australia with 198 medals (80 Gold, 59 Silver and 59 Bronze) topped the chart and England with 136 Medals (45 Gold, 45 Silver and 46 Bronze) stood second.

25-Indian Swimmer Double Crosses Bangla Channel, Sets World Record

Pune-based 17-year-old swimmer Sampanna Ramesh Shelar has set a world record to double cross the Bangla Channel. 
Shelar, is the first person to swim to and fro from Saint Martin’s Island Jetty to Teknaf in Bangladesh also known as the Bangla Channel. He has completed the journey of 32.2 kilometres in 9 hours and 10 minutes.

26-Government Raises NABARD’s Authorised Capital To Rs 300 Billion

As part of the drive to double the income of farmers by 2022, the government has raised the authorised capital of NABARD by six times from 50 billion to Rs 300 billion to help it increase its lending to the rural economy.
A bill in this regard was approved by Parliament earlier this year. The increase in authorised capital will enable Nabard to respond to commitments it has undertaken, particularly in respect of the Long Term Irrigation Fund and on-lending to cooperative banks.

27-UN Launches Road Safety Trust Fund

United Nations’ Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed announced the launch of the ‘UN Road Safety Trust Fund’ to stimulate action that can save lives and prevent injuries and sufferings associated with road accidents. As per the UN data over 1.3 million drivers, passengers and pedestrians die each year on the roads.
The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the development arm of the UN in Europe, is designated as the Secretariat for the Trust Fund. A contribution of USD 1500 to the fund could help save one life and prevent 10 serious injuries.

28-Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana Launched In Telangana

Launching the ‘Gram Swaraj Abhiyan’ in Telangana, the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan stated the number of LPG distribution points in the State will be increased to 1,000 from the existing 707 for quicker and efficient delivery of gas cylinders.
Mr Pradhan promised to create 20 lakh ‘happy homes’ in the State through free LPG gas connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)— the scheme providing free cooking gas connections to below the poverty line families.

29-Dharmendra To Be Conferred With Raj Kapoor Lifetime Achievement Award

Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra will be conferred with the prestigious Raj Kapoor Lifetime Achievement and filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani with Raj Kapoor Special Contribution awards. Maharashtra Culture Minister Vinod Tawde announced the names of the winners.

 

The lifetime achievement awards carry a citation and cash reward of five lakh rupees while the special contribution awards carry a citation and three lakh rupees cash prize each. The state government-instituted awards will be given away at the 55th Maharashtra State Marathi Film Festival.

30-Himachal Pradesh Celebrates Its 71st Foundation Day

Himachal Pradesh celebrated its 71st foundation day with much fanfare and gaiety. Several cultural events were organized across the state. It may be recalled that the hill state came into existence after the merger of 30 odd princely states in 1948.
The main event was held at Ridge Maidan in Shimla, where Chief Minister Jairam Thakur reviewed the ceremonial Parade presented by police, home guards and NCC cadets.

31-UK Joins International Solar Alliance To Mark Narendra Modi Visit

The United Kingdom joined the India-led International Solar Alliance (ISA)ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s four-day visit to Britain. At an event held at the London Stock Exchange as part of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2018 (CHOGM), Britain formally announced its membership of the alliance.
This alliance aims to raise $1 trillion of private and public finance to provide affordable and sustainable energy for all by 2030.

32-Veteran Journalist S Nihal Singh Passes Away

Veteran journalist S Nihal Singh passed at the age of 88 following an illness. He was suffering from kidney-related ailments.
Nihal Singh had worked with several leading newspapers including The Indian Express, The Statesman and Khaleej Times.

33-World Haemophilia Day- 17 April

 

Every April 17 World Haemophilia Day is recognised worldwide to increase awareness of haemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders. The theme of WHD 2018 is ‘Sharing Knowledge Makes Us Stronger’.
World Haemophilia Day was started in 1989 by the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) which chose to bring the community together on April 17 in honour of WFH founder Frank Schnabel’s birthday.

34-Lt Gen PP Malhotra Takes Over As Director-General Of NCC

Lieutenant General PP Malhotra assumed charge as Director General of National Cadet Corps (NCC), the largest uniformed youth organization in the world.
Prior to assuming his present appointment, he was the Chief Engineer of the Army’s premier Northern Command.

35-Bandhan Bank Among Top 50 Most Valuable Brand In India

Kolkata-based Bandhan Bank Ltd became one of the top 50 most valuable publicly traded firms in India. The market capitalization of Bandhan Bank was at Rs64,000 crore, claiming 50th rank, according to BSE data.
Tata Consultancy Services Ltd is the most valuable company in India, followed by Reliance Industries Ltd and HDFC Bank Ltd. Bandhan Bank had raised Rs4,500 crore through a successful initial public offering (IPO) in March after setting the pricing at Rs375 per share.

36-Yes Bank Launches GST Backed Over Draft Facility For MSMEs

Yes Bank has announced the launch of ‘Yes GST’, an OD (over draft) facility for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Through this, an MSME can avail OD up to Rs 1 crore, based on their annual turnover, backed by GST returns.
Any additional assessment of balance sheet or bank statements will not be required. This OD facility can be availed by an MSME against mortgage of residential or commercial property. The sanctioned amount can be utilised by the MSME either fully or in tranches

37-Bengaluru Highest Paying City For Talent: Report

 

The garden city of Bengaluru is found to be the highest paying city in the country, with an average annual cost to company (CTC) for talent across all levels and functions standing at about Rs 11 lakh, according to Randstad Insights, the research and analysis division of Randstad India.


Pune stands second at around Rs 10 lakh, followed by Delhi NCR and Mumbai with an average annual CTC figure of a little under Rs 10 lakh and around Rs 9 lakh, respectively.

38-Government Revises Target To Complete PMGSY From Year 2022 To 2019

The Union Government has stated that the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana or PMGSY is well on its way to achieving the target by March 2019.The scheme, since its inception in 2000, has been able to provide connectivity to more than One lakh 50 thousand habitations. 
Sensing the importance and urgency of rural roads for national development, the target date for completion of PMGSY-I has been preponed from 2022 to 2019. 

39-World Heritage Day- 18 April

Every year, 18th April is celebrated Worldwide as World Heritage Day to create awareness about Heritage among communities. This year the theme is ‘Heritage for Generations’.
The theme emphasizes on inter-generational transfer of knowledge. In India, World heritage day will be celebrated at National Rail Museum, New Delhi. There are total 36 world heritage sites in India, as designated by UNESCO.

41-India To Grow At 7.4% In 2018: IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has stated that India is expected to grow at 7.4% in 2018 and 7.8% in 2019 and would re-emerge as one of the fastest growing major economies in the period.
The IMF explained this is due to the strong private consumption as well as fading transitory effects of the currency exchange initiative and implementation of the national goods and services tax. According to the IMF, India will leave its nearest rival China which will grow at 6.6 in 2018 and 6.4% in 2019.

42-India Wins Election To Crucial NGO Committee In UN

India has won an election to a crucial non-governmental organisation committee in the United Nations. It topped the election held by the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations in the Asia Pacific States category.

India got the highest number of votes at 46, followed by Pakistan 43, Bahrain 40 and China 39. The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations is a standing committee of Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Its main tasks include consideration of applications for consultative status and requests for reclassification submitted by NGOs.

43-FAO Designates 14 New Sites As GIAHS

Since 2016, fourteen new sites have been designated as Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS), including the first ones in Europe.As with other designated sites, these systems highlight agricultural traditions that promote sustainability, safeguard biodiversity and protect the environment while supporting the social and economic development necessary for stable, decent livelihoods.
The 14 new sites range from oases to rice terraces, wasabi cultivation to raisin production. The 14 new sites are:
  1. Siwa Oasis, Egypt 2016.
  2. Chinampa Agriculture in the World Natural and Cultural Heritage Zone in Xochimilco, Tláhuac and Milpa Alta, Mexico 2017.
  3. Zhagana Agriculture -Forest-Animal Husbandry Composite System, China 2017.
  4. Huzhou Mulberry-dyke & Fish Pond System, China 2017.
  5. Osaki Kodo’s Traditional Water Management System for Sustainable Paddy Agriculture, Japan 2017.

44-Commerce Ministry Launches Digital Platform For MSME Exporters

Commerce and Industry Minister launched the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) GlobalLinker platform for MSME exporters in New Delhi. This move is aimed at assisting the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) engaged in exports.
This initiative will help in expanding India’s multi-focused export strategy and also aid in connecting art and artisans to the market. FIEO GlobalLinker is setup with a view to make the business growth of SMEs simpler, more profitable and enjoyable.

48-Odisha’s 2nd Longest River Bridge Opened

The much-awaited bridge ‘Ib Setu’ built over the Ib river in Sambalpur districtwas thrown open to the public by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. The 2.5-km-long bridge, which is the State’s second longest bridge, has been built in three years at a cost of Rs. 117.50 crore.
The bridge has helped establish direct road connectivity between Sambalpur and Brajarajnagar and the distance has now been reduced by 50 km.

49-Aditi Rao Hydari To Receive Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Award For Bhoomi

Aditi Rao Hydari will receive Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Award 2018 for the Best Leading Lady (Critics Award) for her memorable performance in Bhoomi.
The award ceremony will be held in Mumbai. It will be attended by producers, directors, distributors and exhibitors among others from the film fraternity.
